The six books supporting my work right now. . I'v The six books supporting my work right now.
.
I've got hundreds of books on the shelves in my office (and yes I have read all of them!)
.
As it's World Book Day I wanted to share the ones I find myself reaching for most often, whether I'm coaching individual leaders, working with a whole team or facilitating journaling or emotional intelligence workshops.
.
1. On Becoming A Person by Carl Rogers.
Dr Rogers was a therapist and Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry and the book covers questions like: What is personal growth and what do we need to make it possible? How can one person help another? What is creativity and how can it be fostered?
.
2. The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion by Christopher K Gerber, PhD.
.
As a clinical psychologist and lecturer at Harvard Medical School, this is an evidence-based guide to build a habit of self-compassion, that allows us better mental and physical health by helping us acknowledge and work through the full range of our emotions.
.
3. The Way We're Working Isn't Working by Tony Schwartz
.
10 years old and even more relevant than ever; more evidence of the damaging effects of over-work, busyness and "hustling". This is super-practical guide for individuals, leaders and organisations to re-energise our lives - at home and work.
.
4. The Body Keeps The Score by Bessell Van Der Kolk, MD
.
The science behind how our life experiences- particularly the traumatic ones - get stored in our body and make us sick. And how it's not drugs or talking therapy that can heal us. Totally revolutionised my understanding of myself and my clients.
.
5. Dare to Lead by @brenebrown
.
Research based advice on how to lead mindfully and live bravely. Probably the only leadership book anyone needs!
.
6. Note to Self- a 7 step path to Gratitude and Growth by @lauriebuchanan.author
.
A really accessible set of exercises to help us identify and let go of our emotional baggage. Lots of guaranteed aha moments.
.
Have you read any of these? What did you think? And do you have your own recommendations to build on these? #worldbookday #bookshelf #bookstagram

Are you like me? A ton of different notebooks and Are you like me? A ton of different notebooks and journals on your shelf, but you haven't got started?
.
Sometimes a journal can be so lovely that writing in it seems a crime. Or perhaps the instruction to "write down what you're grateful for" EVERY DAY is too demanding. Or those blank pages to "get creative" are a tad scary.
.
I'm a coach. And people who come for coaching have similar fears; what if I say something embarrassing? What if I have nothing to say? What if I get emotional?
.
Journaling - at least Journal Safari - is a form of self-coaching. So I've used the evidence on what makes journaling work plus my experience and empathy as a coach to create a journal (and guidance videos) as well as classes to be your guide. To get you started, keep you motivated, spark deeper insights and more committed action.

"Find a picture of you. Just you (no kids, no pet "Find a picture of you. Just you (no kids, no pets, no other people). It needs to be from a time/in a moment when you felt good/content/worthy/seen."
.
This is the preparation for tonight's guided journal class where we're looking at identity; who are you, really?.
.
From the chat in our membership WhatsApp this is proving challenging. Quite apart from the judgement (I don't like the way I look), there is a growing realisation of how few pictures fit this criteria.
.
I understand. When my kids were growing up, I took the lion's share of the photos and videos. My partner wasn't the type to say "you look great/happy" and to spontaneously capture that on film. As I hit my 40s, I became less happy with the way I looked, so was relieved to avoid being in the frame.
.
I know selfies get a bad rap, but the act of deciding to capture how you feel (and yes how you look) is a way of saying to oursrlves: "I see you. You are worthy of this moment, you are good enough exactly how you are."
.
I don't filter or "fine tune" my selfies because that would contradict that belief that I'm good enough; that self acceptance. I tend to only take one shot (not hundreds) and go with that - again self acceptance and a hangover from the days of real film (remember that??)
.
This is me on a roof top at the end of a day in Trastavere in October. I didn't check my hair (as you can see) or my make up (what's left of it) but I wanted to capture how grateful, happy and content I was to be on my own, on a warm evening, listening to the laughter and sounds of families preparing and eating dinner in those lit rooms behind me. In that moment I didn't want to be anywhere else, with anyone else, looking or feeling anything else.
.
This is not at all to say I don't have moments of judging myself, criticising my weight, my strange facial expressions, my choice of outfit, you name it. But we're all our harshest critics, right? I've learnt that other people are responding to the emotion and the broad brush strokes of an image, unless of course their lack of aelf-acceptance is so strong, it's flooding out onto their harsh view of others. And that's very much their stuff, not mine.
#journalsafari
This is how we start every journal writing class. This is how we start every journal writing class.
.
Three minutes of Gestalt-inspired writing, where you hand write (that bit is important) whatever arises in this moment related to these questions.
.
You just get your thoughts and emotions out on paper. No editing, no over thinking. Then we step back, pause, breathe and read back.
.
What do you notice? What's on your page? Thoughts? Emotions? To-do lists? Recriminations? Judgements? Gratitude?
.
The power is in the pause. Try it and let me know how you get on.
